Set Out on Mr. Langley's Walking Tour!

The very best way to see London's many wonders is by foot! Lace up your most comfortable walking shoes, grab an umbrella and head out. Many excellent books will guide you on planned walks, or you can contact one of several companies that specialize in guided walks of London. They offer everything from a walk that follows the gruesome story of Jack the Ripper, to walking the upscale Old Mayfair area — or perhaps you'd prefer to learn about London's deepest secrets? Most walks last about two hours, cost under £5, and end close to a Tube train station.

I have a favorite walk of my own — just a fun walk — that takes about three to four hours depending on how many stops I make. My walking tour takes you to many well-known landmarks and some that are off the beaten path. I have been known to make a full day of this walk, and you could as well!

Start at Westminster Tube train station and cross Westminster Bridge walking away from Big Ben the Houses of Parliament, then take a left down the stairs at the other side. This will take you to a walking path in an area called South Bank and Bankside. These are two of my favorite areas of London because there is so much to see and do. You will almost certainly return to see more after you have finished this walk.

Take this path along the River Thames all the way to Tower Bridge, then cross Tower Bridge and walk back on the other side to where you began and Westminster. In a few places you have to leave the path by the river, but the route is well signposted and the detour is only a few blocks.

During my walk you will see...
• London Eye
• Dali Universe
• London Aquarium
• Royal Festival Hall
• Hayward Gallery
• National Film Theatre
• Royal National Theatre
• Gabriel Wharf
• Oxo Tower
• Bankside Gallery
• Tate Modern
• Millennium Bridge
• Shakespeare's Globe and Rose Theatre
• Vinopolis City of Wine
• Clink Prison
• Golden Hinde
• Southwark Cathedral
• London Dungeon
• Britain at War
HMS Belfast
• Tower Bridge

... and you are only half way done! Once you cross Tower Bridge you must go to St. Katherine's Wharf, on the right side behind the hotel, and after that the Tower of London. You could be exhausted by now so don't feel bad. Hop on a Tube train at Tower Station or take a taxi back to your hotel and come back another day to finish the return trip.
