Come Face to Face with a Thousand Faces

Among the many famous galleries in London, the National Portrait Gallery is a perennial favorite. Over 1,000 portraits are on display — from the 17th century to present day — created in mediums from oil painting to sculptures to photographs. You'll see kings and queens, stars of film and TV, statesmen, politicians, celebrities and non-celebrities alike — you name the person and likely you'll find their portrait. The gallery is arranged chronologically beginning on the second floor and ending on the ground floor.

Special events and exhibitions are routine at the gallery, including free Friday night musical events. Admission is free, but an audio guide (available in 10 languages) costs £2.00 and is highly recommended. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m./Thursday and Friday until 9 p.m., and is a short walk from Trafalgar Square. Charing Cross is the closest underground station.
